HOW TO CRUSH A TWISTED MIND

I saw this FB post on a friend’s wall the other day. I didn’t know if he wrote this himself or if he just copy-pasted this from his ka-DDS. What I knew for certain was that I couldn’t let this go unanswered. However, what was supposed to be a short comment to rebut his statement became a lengthy article –an article that’s only fit for a blog. Read on! 🙂

My Answers:

True, we apparently see different sides of the picture.

YOU CALL YOURSELVES SILENT MAJORITY, I ONLY SEE A LOUD MINORITY.

You see a loud minority, I see a group of courageous Filipinos who are willing to stand up, to go out into the streets, and to make their voices heard in the face of all these blatant attempts to twist, distort and revise our history. I see a group of fearless Filipinos who are trying to fight for truth and justice despite the fear of being bullied, harassed, threatened, humiliated, bashed, mobbed, badgered or stigmatized by online trolls, rabid Duterte apologists and Marcos loyalists. I see a group of dauntless Filipinos who will go to battle with everything that they’ve got to ensure that they will never again go through the same hell that they experienced under Marcos’ tyrannical rule.

YOU HATE MARTIAL LAW, WELL I LIKE THE MARCOS ERA.

You like the Marcos era, well I detest and loathe it. Marcos was a despot, a tyrant, a dictator. He plundered our coffers to the tune of $10 billion. Under his close watch and on his specific instructions (research about the Gen. Orders he issued), 70,000 were jailed, 35,000 were tortured, 3,257 were killed, and 769 were gone without a trace. He was an autocrat who abolished the Congress, destroyed our institutions, persecuted his critics, trampled over our most basic political and civil rights, clamped down on all media entities, and sequestered countless private companies to enrich his family and his cronies. He was an unrepentant liar who fabricated stories about his medals and his role during the WWII, the source of his massive wealth, his reason for declaring ML, the real socio-economic condition of the country, and his excesses and abuses during his reign of terror. He was an economic saboteur who left us with a jaw-dropping external debt of $28.3 billion (debt that we are all paying until year 2025) and the humiliating title, “The Sick Man of Asia.” He was a power-hungry oppressor who made a new Constitution to legitimize and accommodate his desire to take control over the country, beyond the constitutionally-mandated maximum of two 4-year terms in office.

YOU SEE VICTIMS, I SEE PEACE AND ORDER.

You see peace and order, I read and research and listen about the horrors and atrocities of ML. I know the agonizing stories of Primitivo Mijares, the author of The Conjugal Dictatorship of Ferdinand  and Imelda Marcos, (and his son, Boyet, who was tortured and killed in front of his father), of Archimedes Trajano who was severely tortured, mutilated and dumped on a roadside after he questioned Aimee Marcos about the latter’s appointment as the National Chairman of the Kabataang Barangay, of Hilda Narciso who was repeatedly raped by military men while in detention, of Liliosa Hilao who was raped and tortured in front of her 16-year-old sister (Her dead body bore cigarette burns on her lips, injection marks on her arms, bruises and gun barrel marks. Her internal organs were removed and her vagina was sawed off to cover signs of torture and sexual abuse). There are countless more (some remain faceless and nameless up to this day) who suffered water cure, electric shocks to genitals, Russian roulette, strangulation, cigar and flat iron burns, and other brutal torture methods at the hands of Marcos’ torture units.

YOU HAIL NINOY AS A HERO –A MARTYR, WELL HE IS A COMMUNIST SUPPORTER.

You see Ninoy as a communist supporter, yes I see him as a martyr whose assassination ignited the fire of Filipinos’ fury and upheaval against the Marcos’ regime. Any well-read and judicious Filipino knows that the murder, subversion and weapons possession charges hurled at him right after the declaration of ML were all fabricated. Now, if successfully negotiating with Hukbalahap’s Luis Taruc for the latter’s unconditional surrender is being a communist supporter; if consistently and brazenly criticizing Marcos for the latter’s tyrannical rule, corruption and other excesses is being a communist supporter; if exposing the summary execution of the 26 Muslim young men in what was to be known as the Jabidah Massacre is being a communist supporter; if deciding to come home against the advice of the people around him, because he believed that the Filipino is worth dying for, is being a communist supporter; if one’s death triggered a long-awaited transformation in many Filipinos –that they finally found the collective courage to rise against a dictatorship after years of shameful and fearful stupor—is being a communist supporter…. then, yes, I guess Ninoy was indeed a communist supporter.

YOU FLAUNT YOURSELVES IN THE STREETS BECAUSE OF THESE MARTIAL LAW VICTIMS, WELL WHY DON’T YOU DO THE SAME AND BLAME CORY AQUINO FOR THE MENDIOLA MASSACRE?

Yes, we flaunt ourselves in the streets because of these Martial Law victims, and we will continue to do so until the Marcoses’ attempts and efforts to crown the late dictator as a hero are completely thwarted. We also attacked the Cory administration for the Mendiola and the Hacienda Luisita massacres; the Ramos administration for its widespread militarization and its pro-imperialist, pro-bureaucratic and anti-people’s policies and programs; the Estrada administration for its shameless corruption and booty capitalism; the Arroyo administration for the Ampatuan Massacre and the plunder and graft and corruption cases filed against her; The PNoy administration for the Kidapawan Massacre and the Mamasapano Encounter; and now, the Duterte administration for the unabated extrajudicial killings, his inaction over the issue of China’s bullying and island-grabbing, his family’s alleged involvement in the Davao Death Squad and in the smuggling of illegal drugs in the country, his idolatry of the late dictator and his propensity to be a dictator himself, his support to the release of big-time plunderers and to the absolution of his erring allies, his refusal to divulge his bank and medical records, his potty mouth, controversial statements and humiliating behavior that have a damaging effect on our relationships with other nations and with each other, his political appointments based on patronage instead of merit, his promotion of a culture of violence and impunity, and his obstinate efforts to silence and thwart dissent. As Philippine-loving citizens, we will continue to be vigilant and clamorous and fierce watchdogs of this country —regardless of who is at its helm. I hope you do your share, too.

YOU BLAME BONGBONG FOR WHAT MARCOS DID, WHY NOT BLAME BIMBY FOR THE BUNGLES OF HIS GRANDMA AND UNCLE?

We blame Bongbong for many of the crimes committed during Martial Law, but we also hold him accountable for the sins he committed henceforth. He continues to whitewash the Marcos dictatorship’s crony capitalism, of which he had been a part. In 1985, when he was 26 years old, his father appointed him chairman of the board of the Philippine Communications Satellite Corporation (Philcomsat). In 1986, after they were ousted, government auditors discovered that Philcomsat was one of the many corporations and organizations used to siphon ill-gotten wealth out of the country. To this day, he continues to shamelessly live off the fruits of the legendary Marcos plunder while arrogantly peddling the lie that his father’s unbelievable wealth is legitimate. He continues to commit a grave injustice to the Martial Law victims when he said, “Pera-pera lang ang habol ng mga ‘yan”, referring to the 9,539 human rights victims in the Hawaii class suit who won the case against the Marcos estate. He continues to play dumb and innocent, while we all know that he is hardly that.

YOU SEE EJK TODAY? WELL, ALL I SEE IS IT IS HIGH TIME SOMEBODY DID SOMETHING.

Yes, we see the state-sanctioned extrajudicial killings today. How can’t we? In just a span of more than a year, the death toll has already risen to 13,000! It is high time that somebody did something, you said? You are absolutely right. Our growing problem with illegal drugs is a menace that is adversely affecting every fiber of our society, and we all have to act now.  The drug lords, drug pushers, drug coddlers and narco-traffickers must be meted out with the most stringent penalty under the law, as they destroy the lives and future of their victims especially the youth and the most vulnerable. The drug users, on the other hand, should be considered as victims or, at the very least, as seriously ill members of society who need immediate treatment. Unless they commit crimes punishable by law, they should not be jailed. Nor killed. They should be rehabilitated.

DON’T EVER IMPOSE YOUR TWISTED MIND ON US.

The last time I checked, we are still living in a democratic country. And under the democracy we enjoy (which the Martial Law victims paid dearly for), we have the right to express ourselves freely. We have the right to speak — or in our present digital age, to voice our opinions, beliefs and convictions using our preferred online social medium. We also have the right to organize. We are not imposing our views on anyone because we know that we can only do so much, especially in as far as educating the open-minded is concerned. You might also want to write an article about your blind support of Duterte and Marcos and, I assure you, I won’t allege you of imposing YOUR twisted mind on us.

HOW TO SPOT AND DEAL WITH AN ONLINE DOUCHE

As a blogger and an active Facebook user who doesn’t have any qualms in sharing and defending my convictions, napapadalas na that I become a target of these online douches.

Ang nakaraang eleksyon, pati na ang mga sumunod na pangyayari, ay mas lalong nagpalala sa pamamayagpag ng mga taong ito, whose favorite pastime is to propagate ideas that are often false and without basis. Ang objective lang nila is to help their political candidates by spreading propaganda, and by ruining the image and reputation of their opponents, nang walang pakundangan sa mga masasaktan at masasagasaan nila along the way. At dahil wala pa tayong naririnig na kaso that any of them has been seriously penalized, their breed continues to thrive and proliferate. Parang kabute lang.

Pero, how does one qualify nga ba as an online douche? Ano ang MO nila? And how do we deal with them? Isa-isahin natin.

1. The Troll. This is someone who sows discord on the internet by starting arguments or upsetting people. They normally post inflammatory, extraneous or off-topic comments and messages with the sole intent of provoking an emotional response or of disrupting a normal, on-topic discussion. Sila ang mga accounts na walang profile pic at gumagamit ng kung anu-anong alias. Example? Abnoy Aquino. Or Leche. Or Kaaway Ng Dilawan. My advice for you when you encounter these people? Do not feed the trolls!

2. The rabid Cult Follower. Like a dog affected with rabies, this person could be extremely violent and vicious in expressing or pursuing his feeling, interest or opinion. Sila ang pinakanakakatakot of all the online douches because we have no way of knowing kung kaya ba nilang isakatuparan ang kanilang mga banta. Example: Lumayas ka na sa Pilipinas kundi papatayin kita! O, di ba, nakakatakot? The best thing to do when you stumble upon someone like this? Immediately file a report against him to Mark Zuckerberg. Or even with the NBI!

3. The Know-it-all. This is someone who acts as though he knows everything and tends to dismiss the ideas, comments, opinions and/or suggestions of others. It is an exercise in futility to argue with, much less convince, someone like him dahil close-minded at self-righteous siya at minsan pa nga ay may condescending attitude. Nakakairita talaga siya. As in. When there is a commenter who makes you feel like an errant child being lectured, siya na ‘yun. If you can’t handle engaging him in a discourse dahil masakit naman talaga sa ulo, just ignore him. He’ll have no choice but to stop eventually lest he looks like an idiot talking to himself.

4. The Ad Hominem Attacker. This is someone who attacks his opponent’s character or personal traits in an attempt to undermine the latter’s argument. Ang mga komento ng basher na ito ay karaniwang derogatory at demeaning because, usually, he knows next to nothing about the issue. A good example would be when I posted an article about the extrajudicial killings in the country under Duterte’s administration, and someone commented, “Malamang, protector o protektado ka ng sindikato ng droga! Loser!” Pwede mo rin siyang i-report kay Pareng Mark, or if you are the forgiving type, ipagpasa-Diyos mo na lang siya.

5. The Pack/Mob Member. This person cannot operate alone. When he finds a prospective victim, he immediately informs his cohorts, at ang kaawa-awang biktima finds herself attacked and swarmed by an army of commenters who seek to harass, silence and tame. “Mga ka-DDS!” Does this sound familiar to you? Sila ang classic example ng online mob at bullies dito sa Pilipinas. You stand no chance na manalo laban sa dami nila, so for your sanity, I suggest na iwan mo na ang thread na ‘yan. Pronto!

6. The Tu Quoque Critic. Pronounced too-kwo-kwee, this is someone who refutes a criticism with the same criticism. Isa pa ring magandang halimbawa is when people criticize the cases of EJKs in Duterte’s war against drugs. I once wrote that suspected drug addicts, drug pushers and drug lords should not be killed. Ang dagdag ko pa nga, dapat silang sampahan ng kaukulang kaso at kapag napatunayang may sala ay ikulong. Many douches argued na okay lang ‘yun because their victims were not given due process either. Pinatay lang din daw nang walang laban. Isa pang ready reply ng mga Duterte supporters is, “Bakit, sa administrasyon naman nina Cory, Ramos, Erap, GMA at PNoy, may EJKs din!” As if that makes everything alright. Mahirap ding makipag-engage sa ganitong klaseng commenter so, unless you are fully equipped in handling someone like him, just try to ignore him.

7. The Genetic-Fallacy Antagonist. This is someone who draws a conclusion based solely on someone’s or something’s history, origin, or source rather than addressing the valid argument. Sa blog ko, I always manage to attract a comment like this: “Hay, naku, isang basurang Aquino pala ang writer! Aquino, lahi ng salot, cancer ng Pilipinas, lahi ng mga *toot*, lahi ng mga abnoy!” Instead of arguing about the finer points of my articles, tinitirya nila ang pangalan that my husband shares with me. You’re better off without this kind of people in your online life so i-block or i-unfriend mo na lang sila and i-delete mo ang kanilang mga comments para hindi masakit sa mata.

8. The Pest. Extremely annoying, this commenter assails you persistently by bombarding you with questions, criticisms or information. Hindi mo pa man nasasagot ang una niyang comment, may apat hanggang lima na kaagad siyang follow-up. Does this line sound familiar to you: “Your Honor, the prosecutor is badgering the witness”? ‘Yan ang gusto mong isigaw when you encounter someone like him. Unless you have an arsenal of valid arguments, compelling pieces of evidence, solid claims, credible proofs, and reputable sources, do not engage him. Asar-talo ka lang.

9. The User of dubious sources. This person’s arguments are heavily dependent on not-so-admirable sources. Dito sa Pilipinas, sikat na ginagamit ang mga articles na galing sa mga propaganda websites na gaya ng Get Real Philippines, Global News, at ang walang kamatayang blog ni Mocha Uson. Madalas ding gawing sources and mga parody websites (like Adobo Chronicles), satirical news websites (like The Philippine Trend, Mosquito Press, The Philippine Chronicle, and The Professional Heckler), at fake news websites (like So, What’s News? and Eritas Times). Netizens are also fond of using memes without checking their sources. What you should do when you chance upon this kind of commenter? Type “Fake News Alert” on the comment box and advise others not to share whatever it is he just posted.

10. The Pervert. This is someone who posts lewd, sexually-charged or sexually-suggestive comments to shame, humiliate and stigmatize someone else –usually the female and the members of the LGBTQ community. The commenter can be misogynistic (hates or doesn’t trust women), homophobic (hates or fears homosexuals), chauvinistic (believes his/her gender is superior over the others), or all of the above. Kailan lang, si Anne Nicole De Castro, isang estudyante na sumali sa protest rally against the hero’s burial for the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos, ay nakaranas ng sexual harassment online. Maging sina Sen. De Lima at VP Robredo ay hindi nakaligtas mula sa mga sexual predators na ito. These cases prompted Sen. Hontiveros to file “the ‘Tres Marias’ bills that seek to give women more protection against sexual harassment and violence, including attacks on social media.”

Social media used to be a safe and friendly place where we can freely share our ideas — without fear of being bullied, harassed, threatened, humiliated, bashed, mobbed, badgered or stigmatized. Together, let us try to retrieve that space. Let us all put a stop to the culture of hate and fear that pervades our online world. And let us start with ourselves. Ayon nga kay Gandhi, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

A PRESIDENT’S POTTY MOUTH

Today marks the Duterte administration’s 100^th day since he assumed office on June 30. What’s the best way to observe this milestone, you ask? By reminding ourselves of the President’s trademark gutter mouth, that’s what!

The following is a list of Pres. Duterte’s statements that left the world in shock, and the Filipinos either cringing in shame or cheering shamelessly.

On God:

I can teach God about justice.

When a one-year-old baby, 18-month-old baby is taken from the mother’s arms, brought under a jeep and raped and killed, where is God? And in Syria, women and children, who don’t want to have sex with Isis [Islamic State], they are burned. So where’s God? My God, where are you?

On the Catholic Church:

There are things which the Catholic Church must change or else, it will — by the end of these three decades from now, it becomes irrelevant.

I once considered being a priest. It’s good (that) I didn’t join the priesthood or else, now, I would be a homosexual.

To/On US and/or Pres. Obama:

They say, the CIA is planning to kill me. Until now, I cannot believe that I am the [President]. Give me the chance to think [and realize that I am the] President.

Better think twice now because I would be asking you to leave the Philippines altogether.

The Americans, I don’t like them. They are reprimanding me in public. So I say: ‘Screw you, f*** you, everything else. You are stupid.

I do not want to quarrel with the most powerful country on the planet, but Washington has been so liberal about criticizing human rights, human rights and human rights. How about you? I have so many questions also about human rights to ask you. So … people who live in glass houses should not throw stones at others.

As you know, I’m fighting with (US Secretary of State John Kerry’s) ambassador. His gay ambassador, the son of a whore. He pissed me off.

You have a president, Netanyahu… he doesn’t care about America. Do they ever chastise Netanyahu? No. (on likening himself to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over how they both defy the influence of the United States on the two countries)

I would not cut our umbilical cord to countries we are allied with.

I do not want a rift with America, but they have to go. It’ll become more heated. If they (the ASG members) see an American, the latter will really be killed. Ransomed off, then killed.

Instead of helping us, the first who attacked (the anti-drug campaign) was the State Department. So, you can go to hell. Mr. Obama, you can go to hell.

I am a president of a sovereign state and we have long ceased to be a colony. I do not have any master except the Filipino people, nobody but nobody. You must be respectful. Do not just throw away questions and statements. (in Filipino) Son of a whore, I will curse you in that forum.

I purposely did not attend the bilateral talks between ASEAN countries and the president of the US. The reason is that I do not like the Americans. It’s simply a matter of principle for me.

Eventually in my time, I would break up with America. I would rather go to Russia or to China. Even though we don’t agree with the ideology, they have respect for the people.

We will be wallowing in the mud if you do that to me. (to US Pres. Obama)

Itong EDCA, it is an official document but it’s only signed by an aide and si Gazmin. It does not bear the signature of the President of the Republic of the Philippines, Aquino. Better think twice now because I would be asking you to leave the Philippines altogether.

United States failed as a friend to the Philippines.

There are others who have the mental capacity of dogs who lap at the ass of the Americans.

I got really angry about these threats over this human rights issue. This is the fault of the crazy people in the State Department.

If you think it’s high time for you guys to withdraw your assistance, go ahead. We will not beg for it. Go away. Bring your money to somewhere else. (addressed to the US, EU and UN)

To the European Union:

These stupid lawyers in the EU… well, screw you. I will kick you.

(You can go to hell, Mr. Obama.) The EU, better choose purgatory. Hell is filled up. (over criticisms of his deadly anti-drug war)

I have read the condemnation of the European Union against me. I’m telling them, ‘F**k you. You’re doing it in atonement for your sins.

To the United Nations:

I don’t give a sh*t. I am the president of the Philippines, not the republic of the international community.

I am inviting the United Nations’ Ban Ki … what’s the name of that devil? … Ban Ki-moon… to come to the Philippines.

(I encourage her to) come to the Philippines and count the numbers of deaths also incurred by government with [her] fingers to guide her how many deaths were cost. (to Agnes Callamard, UN special rapporteur for summary executions)

Pati ito si Ban Ki-moon, nakihalo. He also gave his statement before, several weeks ago, about the human rights violation. Sabi ko, isa ka pang tarantado (I said, you’re one more fool).

Maybe we’ll just have to decide to separate from the United Nations. (in Filipino) If you are that insulting, son of a bitch, we should just leave. Take us out of your organization. You have done nothing anyway.

To the International Critics:

Every time you insult the Philippines or you reprimand or castigate me in public, you are really crucifying the Filipino people.

Tomorrow, I will be friends with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and (Chinese President) Xi Jinping.

To China:

The Chinese people this time might find a place in their hearts for the Filipinos. After all, I come from— there’s a Chinese blood in me, so I hope that you treat us your brothers, not your enemies and take note of the plight of our citizens. (to Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua)

On the War Against Drugs:

There are 6,000 barangay captains doing their own thing, manufacturing shabu. How am I supposed to deal with – sometimes I am tempted really to declare martial law.

Rehabilitation is no longer a viable option (for shabu addicts).

Do your duty, and if in the process, you kill 1,000 persons because you were doing your duty, I will protect you. (to police officers)

What I can assure you is, for as long as I’m president, you will have all equipment and weaponry necessary to win the war or at least to defeat them in every fight. (to Filipino soldiers)

I have started this; I will end this. I don’t mind landing in jail as long as you visit me in Muntinlupa. Bring drugs so I can be addicted to them. (on his war against illegal drugs)

You do not have to worry about the criminal liability. I will go to prison for you. Just do it according to the book. If you are pressed down, then do not worry. Just call my name and I will be there to protect you. (to the police and military officers)

If you know of any addicts, go ahead and kill them yourself as getting their parents to do it would be too painful. (to the crowd)

There will be no let-up in this campaign. We will not stop until the last drug lord, the last financier and the last pusher has surrendered or been put behind bars or below the ground if they so wish.

I ordered the validation. I am the one reading it and I am the sole person responsible for this one. (on the narco list)

Crime against humanity? In the first place, I’d like to be frank with you: are they humans? What is your definition of a human being? Human rights? Use it properly in the right context if you have the brains. You cannot wage a war without killing.

If you are involved in drugs, I will kill you. You son of a whore, I will really kill you.

I will pay, for a drug lord: 5M pesos if he is dead. If he is alive, only 4.999 million.

If they are there in your neighborhood, feel free to call us, the police or do it yourself if you have the gun. You have my support. If he fights and fights to the death, you can kill him. I will give you a medal.

We are 104M. You care about –how many—1,600 being killed.

It’s not the work of police to be wrapping people with plastic and (putting) him in the bag. That is not the job of the police. I just told (them) that one bullet will do. Why do you have to wrap it? I said, don’t waste your time.

On Extrajudicial Killings and Human Rights Violations:

My order is shoot to kill. I don’t care about human rights. Believe me, I don’t give a s**t about what they will say.

Do not listen to human rights’ [advocates] because [an advocate of the] human rights is antithesis of government.

You are all hypocrites! You cannot even protect the human rights in your own country, (of) the African-Americans and other minorities, not to mention your inutility in dealing with the genocide going on in Africa and other countries. (to New York-based Human Rights Watch)

Our justice system is dysfunctional. They have to shape up before we can really follow due process.

There is no law which says I cannot threaten criminals.

To Abu Sayyaf and other Terrorists:

I will really open up your body. Just give me vinegar and salt, and I will eat you.

Go ahead. Set off bombs. Time will come when I will eat you in front of the people. I will devour you. (after the Davao bombing)

There will be more, because of retaliation, reprisals, and there will be maybe more blasts. But, there will be a day of reckoning. Bantayan ninyo.

All of us want peace, not the peace of the dead, but the peace of the living. We express our willingness and readiness to go to the negotiating table, and yet we load our guns, fix our sights, pull the trigger. It is both ironic and tragic, and it is endless. (to our Muslim brothers)

To the CPP/NPA/NDF:

Let us end these decades of ambuscades and skirmishes. We are going nowhere and it is getting bloodier by the day.

I am announcing a unilateral ceasefire with the CPP-NPA-NDF effective immediately. I expect and call on our fellow Filipinos and the National Democratic Front and its forces to respond accordingly.

On Sen. Leila De Lima:

Every time I watch the video, I lose my appetite. Only people who will fall for her are … I am not a guard or a motorcycle cop or convict. (referring to Sen. De Lima’s alleged sexual escapades)

Akala niya, siya ang conscience of the country… P—– i– mo, hanggang ngayon naghihintay ako niyan… I kept quiet because you are a lady.

I have a special ano kay ano. She is a government official. One day soon I will – bitiwan ko yan (I will drop her) in public and I will have to destroy her in public.

President Duterte might be a leader with big balls who will try anything in order to get the job done. Unfortunately, he has a bigger mouth that does not know how and when to shut up. As the man holding the highest position in the land, he is expected to adhere to some kind of proper decorum and presidential protocol. So for the country’s sake, let us all hope that our president will learn (asap!) how to wash his mouth —or how to zip it altogether!
